Alexander’s costly victory at Northport provides only a brief reprieve from the onslaught of enemy forces converging on those loyal to the Old law. Prince Phane has created a deadly new soldier – man mixed with darkness – imbued with terrible power and a purpose so sinister that that it could turn those Alexander loves most against him … or take them away from him forever. Zuhl is plundering Fellenden, killing, torturing and enslaving the people for his own selfish purpose. He’s using the fabled Iron Oak forest to build a fleet of warships capable of dominating the oceans of the Seven Isles, ensuring his ultimate dominion over everyone, everywhere. The shades are loose in the world and starting to make their move. They intend to open the Nether Gate and plunge the world of time and substance into eternal darkness. Blood of the Earth is the story of Alexander’s struggle to preserve the Old Law against impossible odds while trying desperately to save the one person he loves most from a fate worse than death.

I read all 7 books. Im torn. I think the author has a great idea here, but there are some real issues with dialogue and repetition of descriptions. Also, the way the main character has amazing magical powers but doesn't use them in certain situations bothers me. Why is there no constancy in the use of magic. For example, if you have the power of illusion and can make yourself seem to be going down one hallway instead of another. Why wouldn't you use the same power several books later when a reasonable opportunity came up. Also, the female characters are idiots. Very flat, bad dialogue... One of the characters actually looked at our hero and says "You're my hero" and she wasn't kidding... I wanted to stab my eyes out.
HOWEVER, there is a ton of action, very creative magic, and all manner of magical beasts and fairy. I do love a story with fairies and dragons. Also, I did read the entire series, so apparently I didn't hate it. If you like a more literary feel to your fantasy, skip this series. If you like a lot of action and don't care if your characters fall a bit flat, please read on and enjoy!

Blood of the Earth Sovereign of the Seven Isles Book Four Volume 4 David A Wells 9781477658437 Books Reviews

This is the fourth book in a series that I love and hate. It has everything, unfortunately, it has 7 books and as soon as I finish one I'm ready for the next, but I'm a read the end type of person and I just can't get to the end! I can find only a few complaints, the biggest is that the author uses the same phrase over and over. Each time our major hero is in a battle (and he's in a LOT of battles) he has his sword in hand and so forth. Having finished the first four, I know I'll be reading the rest, and I highly recommend this series. For those who wonder, should I try this, I can definitely recommend it. It is filled with action, adventure, magic, romance, fantasy - I can't think of anything that is missing, plus the first book is FREE!
Awesome book!
The story is very well written and the characters very engaging. However, I find myself wondering at the depth of the overwhelming odds the protagonists face. The author captures this in the story and I find it almost too much to read. Knowing that the main character is human and that his story will evolve with him overcoming the obstacles before him is what keeps me coming back. The writing is so well done I'm forced to really feel for the character. So much so I had step away to read something much lighter and happy but then coming back to follow once again. Well done.
I would give the plot in the first couple of books in this series a 5 and the writing a 3 if that were an option, so For those books, I averaged the rating to a 4. However, the more books I read, the more I was overwhelmed with all the details of battles and nuances of working all the various magics, plus more and more characters were introduced in each book. Got to the point I was skipping more and more pages and just got tired of it all. Won't be reading any further stories or I would be giving them lower ratings.
As witches and wizards increase their magic with practice, so does this author! However, while some characters seem to have more depth than they did, it's not his strong point yet. I was interested to learn that Alexander chooses to take the blood of the earth selfishly. This might be his first immoral decision in the entire series. Finally, he's made a choice we are led to believe is wrong. I had been waiting for this! Don't get me wrong, Alexander is a cool main character for all his magic, but he was also too perfect... so perfect I can't help but hope something interesting happens with his character. When will power start to draw him? When will he be blinded by anger? -these would be very good options for the author to entertain for a while, just to get readers interest in him up again, not to mention make him human. Azugorath's grip on Isabel isn't as satisfying as an actual character development, but at least she's not another perfect princess angel anymore. Abigail has not done anything unexpected, no real development there. She too gets power thrust upon her, which no reader ever doubted would be an issue for her character. Still a rather annoying princess angel character who is handily perfect at battle tactics with no help or experience, but she did do an impressive physical feat toward the end of the book, which is what the author relies upon heavily to keep our interest. It works, I'm just saying... As my final complaint, I am upset that nothing has been done with Anatoly either. We've known him for a while now, but he is always in the same mood and has the same emotion. I want to know who his real family is and what he cares about besides Alex and Abby. When will he staunchly disagree with one of them? When will he break down? This would be an interesting option. Doesn't he ever dream about anything but war tactics and justice? This character is way too shallow for how long he's been a semi-main character. I could complain about the other characters too, but those are some main issues that could be improved. Five stars because the action is more than enough to keep you hooked, and I'm still enjoying the story.
When I first started this series it seemed like a DnD game story and characters were not fleshed out. There was a lot of similarities to a good DnD dungeon masters yarn including the amount of healing potions which the characters seem to whip out. I also thought the characters were two dimensional and it was all Action from the get go but I persevered and I think that the author is getting better and better with writing. The hero and heroine while still incredibly powerful and win easily get into more and more difficult situations.
The characters are slowly becoming more three dimensional. I wish though the author would focus more on the story and characters and less on these long political/philosophical rants on justifications on why some actions are necessary.
