In the summer of 1979, the last year of a decade disco-dancing its way from counterculture to conservatism, Kevin and Mae, two adrift youths, meet in the canyon while in search of this meaning. Over three days, they discover the canyon's danger can exceed its beauty, that love and faith, like rock, are vulnerable to erosion, and that a life spent together might be grand. But, can a three-day romance in the Grand Canyon be deep enough to last a lifetime--or, at least, longer than disco?

Kevin meets Mae while on an end-of-college trip to the Grand Canyon with his friend; 22 years later, they are there again, this time trying to save their marriage.Best bits: Well crafted. The whole thing is from Kevin's 1st-person POV, and his is a consistent, mostly interesting voice. The 1979 and 2001 storylines are woven together well. I especially appreciated that sometimes the things in 2001 foreshadowed things we hadn't yet covered in 1979, and sometimes not. The 2001 B part redeemed the book for me. The contrast between 2001 A and B showed how faith without a solid root in deeds came uprooted and caused hurt, but when Kevin was intentional about living what he professed to believe, the roots went deep and made a solid foundation for their lives.
Issues: Not being up on my 70's music or pop culture, the frequent references to songs, shows, etc, got a little old. The twist into 2001 version B was unexpected and felt a little like a cop-out, but it was nice to have a HEA. I struggle to reconcile Kevin's actions with his professed faith. More drunkenness, drugs, and sex than I prefer.

Tim does a great job taking you through Kevin and Mae's life and its crazy twists and turns that grabs you...set in two different times in the character's lives. Entertaining and unpredictable, great character development that many will be able to relate to....from a youthful weekend trip to mid-life challenges. Highly recommended!
The story of Kevin and Mae was wonderful! I did not want to put it down as I wanted to see where the relationships went. The references to 70-80's culture provided great humor and memories! I felt like I knew all of the characters very well and I truly liked them as people. Thank you to the follow up to Accidental Bachelor. Such fun reading!
I really loved Finding Grand. The author did an excellent job of developing the characters to make them very believable and interesting. The pace was perfect for my taste and there were plenty of exciting moments to keep the reader engaged. I thought it was sincere, witty and sweet. If you have ever hiked the Grand Canyon it makes this book even more satisfying as you can re-live your experience thru this fun story.
I read Finding Grand in 2 days. I loved the three dimensional characters and off the wall references that brought me back to my younger days. You will laugh cry and grow; single or married, this book has a lot to say about relationships, faith, and purpose. I recommend this book, to anyone that loves a good story and especially to anyone that loves 70's/80's music.
This novel has a very unique blend of humor and depth. The first chapters gave me the impression that it was going to be a love story with a lot of laughs (which it is). But as it developed further, it revealed additional layers of emotional and spiritual reflection, without ever becoming sappy or heavy-handed. Easy to read and funny, it is also thought provoking, and ultimately uplifting. I highly recommend it.
I was looking forward to his new book and I was not disappointed. Well thought out, interesting, and a fun read. That is a great trifecta in my opinion. When reviewing books, for me, it is pretty simple. How long does the book sit on the nightstand after I start it. This book didn't last long(I finished it quickly). It successfully engaged me. I wanted to know what was coming next. I think we will all find a bit of ourselves in the characters. Not perfect, but wanting to be better. Want to fix things, but not sure how. Toss all this together with some pretty funny stuff and this book is winner.
Finding Grand is an excellent meditation on where we've been, who we are now and the possibilities of where we can still go.
Main character Kevin realizes this over the course of the book, alternating fighting off his current state of melancholy with fond, often laugh out loud memories of his formative past.
Author Tim Holsten deftly switches between past and present, surprising the reader with bit players becoming integral forces in the protaganist's world.
Part travelogue, part spiritual journey, part coming of age story, full-time page-turner - finished this over the course of a weekend as I couldn't resist finding out where the character's would land.
I found myself right there among the character's trials and tribulations, and picturesque landscape of the Grand Canyon - Holsten's writing is vivid and imaginative, and recommend without hesitation Finding Grand, the book and your own personal adventure.
