Henry Olcott's biographic account of The Buddha combines experience and wisdom when introducing his life to a Western audience.

While brief, Olcott's examination of the holy prophet's life is as vivid and fresh today as it was when it was published. Widely circulated, this account was responsible for introducing many otherwise knowledgeable scholars to the origins of Buddhism and the principles of the faith.

The truth behind Gautama Buddha's early life, the time in which he lived, and the effect he had upon the religious life of India and the Eastern regions is detailed. Olcott first presents a series of facts about the founding sage, and then examines further the principles of the Buddhist religion.

The key differences, such as the lack of a God figure and the notion of enlightenment and self-sacrifice as being a path to Nirvana, are noted as contrasting Buddhists to the other major world religions. Commonalities which Buddhism shares are also noted; good practises of thought wherein evil ideas and emotions are kept out of the mind through cultivating good attitudes to others and the world, have their equivalents in other faiths.

This edition of The Life Of Buddha And Its Lessons is adapted from the revised text of 1919, which contains modest improvements to the tone and clarity of the original.

The Life Of Buddha and its Lessons Henry Olcott Books

Well written and quite informative. A joy to read and contemplate. Although it is a pretty hard sell of the author's items for daily meditation it provokes critical thought. For those who do not have the natural ability to enjoy the struggles life provides it is a good vehicle to seek to escape daily lose-lose and start the journey to ultimate spiritual peace.

Meditating on the author's viewpoint I came the realization that some of us found that "ultimate spiritual peace" rather boring and instead we live each moment as the gift it is rather than a burden of cycle of endless suffering. Living with integrity, honor, and responsibility doesn't imply the need to reverse bad karma but rather the conscious choice to live as a personal choice rather a life prescribed by others.

The Life Of Buddha and its Lessons Henry Olcott Books Reviews

The author uses a lot of big complicated words to communicate what I believe was supposed to be a simple concept. It helped that I have read other books on Buddhism before this but don't use this book to help you decide if Buddhism is right for you.
Very short with no information that would be surprising outside a mildly interesting discussion of how we tend to mythologize the spiritually advanced and the bizarre(to me) idea that must have been contemporary to this pamphlet that Buddhism was atheistic (he was arguing against that btw)
This is not really about the Buddha, but instead an essay regarding the prophets and holy people of all cultures. I was hoping for more factual information about Gautama Buddha, and got some satisfaction after the lengthy first chapter. Book needs a more informative title, but is worth the price.
I was looking for a book to help me better understand Buddhism.....this isn't it. The good thing about the book is that it is short
Not what I was expecting, I thought it would be longer. Good but was expecting more from it as to the teachings of the Buddha.
A short commentary on the historical life of Buddha, as well as an overview if Buddhist thought - including tolerance, peace, benevolence, a brotherhood of all men. Against that backdrop are also balance, detachment, concepts of an illusory world and self-control and self-purification. Olcott was a theosophist, so the book reflects that worldview. Nevertheless, it is a classic and interesting work on the life and teachings of one of the great teachers of all time.
I love listening to audio books at work and this one works great for keeping me stress free and present in the moment, Its very postiive and has meditation lessons that come in handy for keeping my mind and my body inline. the book really helped me to stay positive during a very stressful time in my life. I will recommend this audio book to all.
